Compound Noun and Material Noun | Part 4

Hello Friends, My name is Nihir Mandowara. And welcome to the fourth part in the series of tutorial of learning Grammar.
Here, we are going to discuss about Compound Noun and Material Noun
Okay, So, lets get started

Firstly, we will Remember what we have learnt already about nouns. We have discussed about nouns and main four classifications of them
which were they ?
Proper noun and Common noun
Collective noun
Countable and Uncountable nouns
In that we discussed about Singular Noun and Plural Nouns
Concrete and Abstract Noun

Two types of nouns are left in the Nouns series for us to learn., which we will cover in this video
Compound noun
Material Noun


Compound noun is a
Noun that is made with two or more words. – 2 times
Usually they are a combination of [Noun] + [Noun] or [adjective ] + [noun]

Lets see Examples of these combination
Noun + Noun
 1st is toothpaste
 here “tooth” and “paste” both are nouns and they form a compound noun = toothpaste
 2nd is bedroom
 here “bed” and “room” both are noun and they form a compund noun = bedroom

2. Adjective + Noun
1st monthly ticket
here “monthly” is adjective and “ticket” is noun and they form a compound noun = monthly ticket
2nd one is “software”, here “soft” is adjective and “ware” is noun and they form a compund noun = software

Lets see some more combinations and there examples
Verb + Noun
Swimming pool : here “swimming” is verb and “pool” is noun, and they both together form swimming pool
2. Prepostion + Noun
Underground : here “under” is preposition and “ground” is noun, and they both together form underground
3. Noun + Verb
Haircut : here “hair” is noun and “cut” is a verb, and the both form a word “hair cut”
4. Adjective + verb
Drycleaning : here “dry” is adjective and “cleaning” is verb and they both form a compund word, dry cleaning

Don’t worry if you you don’t know about verbs, adjective or prepositions, we will cover each of them in great detail in our upcoming
Session

There are three forms of compound nouns
1st Open or Spaced : space between words
e.g, tennis shoe : Note here there is a space between word tennis and shoe
2nd Hyphanated : hyphen between words
e.g, six-pack : here there is a hyphen between the word six and pack
3rd Closed or Solid : no space between the words
e.g, bedroom : here there is no space between the word “bed” and “room”

Lets see Sentence Examples
Shall we play football today?, here football is the closed form of compund noun as there is no space between the words
This is a great swimming pool. Here swimming pool is the open form of compund noun as there is a space between the words
My mother-in-law lives with us. Here “mother-in-law” is the hyphanatic compound noun as there is hyphen between the words

I hope you are clear with Compund Nouns. Now lets look into another category of nouns, Material Nouns


Material Nouns are
names of materials  or substances  out of which things are made.
We get these materials mainly from three sources – nature, animal and plants.
They are usually uncountable nouns
Lets look into examples to make things clear
1st Air : where do we get from : nature
2nd Gold : we get the raw material from nature
3rd Milk : we get it from Animals like cow, buffalo, goats
4th Juice : we get it from trees

Now Lets see Sentence Examples
We run a steel company
   here “steel” is a material noun
2. Lomani Paris is my favorite perfume
 here “perfume” is a material noun
3. I like “silver” ring
 here “silver” is a material noun
