What is Noun | Proper and Common Noun | Collective Noun | Part1

What is Parts of Speech?
Parts of Speech are type of words in Grammar.
There are many different word category.
Every word in any sentence is from this Category.
This are mainly divided into 8 categories :
Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adverb, Adjective, Conjuction, Preposition, Interjecton
Today, we will explore the first category which is Noun

So, what exactly is a Noun.
Noun is a word that contains :
Person
Place
Thing
Or Idea
Once again I repeat, Noun is a word that contains :Person,Place,Thing Or Idea
To make you understand it, Lets look into the examples of each.

You must be knowing this Man, Yaa Sachin Tendulkar, who is he. He is a Person.
What about this place, Taj Mahal.
Books comes in category of things
And this image shows an abstract term “bravery” of a person who is fighting `
Hope, you are clear with these categories : Person, Place, Things and Idea


Nouns are basically classified mainly into four categories :
1.Proper nouns and Common nouns
2. Countable and Uncountable nouns
3. Collective Nouns
4. Concrete nouns and Abstract Nouns


So, lets look into the first category,
Proper and Common Noun,

What is Proper Noun :
It defines a name of particular place or thing, see the highlighted word particular. It specifies uniqueness

And What is Common Noun :
It defines a name we generally use for person, place or things
Lets Understand with examples



You can see in the image, There is a collection of books
Books comes in the category of “Common Noun”
Now see the another image of a particular book named : “New Grammar Tree”, So, it comes in the category of proper noun

Lets, see some more examples to make things clearer :
COMMON NOUN
Person,Book, Swimmer, Country

Proper Noun
Sachin, New Grammar Tree, Michal Phelps, India

Now this exercise is to practice the concept we just learnt.
Lets look into them
Here green underlined words signifies : proper noun
And orange signifies common noun
Nihir has a Big Bag
 Paris is Capital  of France
 A dog is man’s best friend
 Arun likes to travel by train
 Kabir is a good swimmer

Now, lets look into another category of Noun, Collective Noun

Collective Noun refers to a group or collection of same kind of :
Person
Place and Things,

Lets look into the examples to make things clear

Collection of Books refer’s to “Bunch of Books”, So here bunch is collective noun which refers to collection of many books at a time
Many Fishes going in a group are referes as “School of Fish”
Many Sailors in a Navy are refered as “Crew of Sailors”

Let’s look into some more collections and there naming

A litter of puppies
 A gaggle of geese
 A pride of lions
 A troop of monkeys
 A band of musicians
 A rope of pearls

Identify Nouns..
Charlie is a famous actor.
 Harsh is a great person.
 Reena is good speaker.
 A troop of monkeys was going.
 Sam eat food fast.
 Lion is king of jungle


So, that’s all in today’s tutorial. We just learnt what are nouns
And two classifications into them namely,
Proper and Common Noun
Collective Noun
