Countable and Uncountable Noun | Part 2

Firstly, we will remember what we learnt. We discussed about Nouns. So, what is a Noun. If you remember, Noun is a word that contains : Person, Place Thing or an Idea Then we discussed about classifications of Noun Proper Noun and Common Noun Collective Noun Countable and Uncountable Noun Concrete and abstract Noun Proper noun means : name of particular person, place or thing and Common noun means : name we give in general to all person, places or things Example : Vatsal is a good Boy Here Vatsal is a name of particular person, So it is Proper noUN While, Boy is a name we give in general to any Boy, So it is a Common Noun Then we discussed about Collective noun Collective Noun Refers to a group or collection of same kind of : Person,Place orThing. Example : Bunch of Books. I hope you are clear about the two categories. Now we will go to the next category Countable Nouns and Uncountable Nouns Countable Nouns are Things we can count using numbers. //So If you can count any thing, it comes in category of Countable Noun Countable Nouns can be singular or Plural. Examples include a dog, a man, three bags Remember that countable nouns are things we can count. Relate them with examples : 1. Ramesh has 8 pencils. 2. She has two dogs 3. How many friends do you have? Singular and Plural Forms Singular Forms If there is one and only one person., place or thing is involved A, an and the are used while using them Examples : a bus, an orange, the sun Examples The bird flew away, Here => The Bird means we are talking of only a single Bird A dog is Men’s best friend => A Dog means we are talking of only a dog An apple a day keeps a doctor away => An apple also says that we are talking of a single apple Plural Forms If there is more than one :Person,Place ,Thing ,Idea ‘How many?’ is used to find quantity of plural form Singular Noun is changed to plural by adding ‘s’, ‘es’ and ‘ies’ at the end Singular Nouns => Cow, Match, Box, Lady Plural Noun => Cows, Matchs, Boxes, Ladies Sentence Examples The monkey started eating banana. The monkeys started eating bananas The bird flew away. The birds flew away The thief put the jewel in the bag The thieves put the jewels in the bag Uncountable Noun things that we cannot count with numbers We can use some or any with them They usually do not have a plural form.
